Workshop 04 / Clay

Something from your hands.

Start with a small ball of air-dry clay and make a decorative bowl. The aim is a form that feels good in your hands. A slightly uneven rim is part of its character.

Make a smooth starting shape

Take a small handful of clay and gently roll it into a ball. Keep the rest covered so it does not dry out. Press your thumb into the centre, stopping before the base.

Pinch and turn

Support the outside with one hand. With the other, gently pinch the wall between your thumb and fingers, turning the bowl a little after each pinch. Keep the walls fairly even.

Give it a little character

Soften the rim with a slightly damp finger. Add a few shallow marks with a blunt tool if you like. Avoid adding too much water, which can weaken the clay.

Let it rest

Leave the piece on a flat surface to dry for the time stated on your clay’s packaging. Turn it only when firm enough. Wipe your work surface with a damp cloth rather than making dust.
